Frqncy:

'Frequency' is a music video game developed by Harmonix and published by SCEA, marking Harmonix's first major release. It was launched in November 2001, with a sequel, 'Amplitude,' following in 2003.

In this game, players control a virtual character called a "FreQ" as they navigate an octagonal tunnel, with each wall containing a musical track featuring sequences of notes. By pressing buttons corresponding to the note positions on the track, players release "sonic energy" that plays the music. Successfully playing two measures of the track without errors captures it, causing the music to play automatically until the next pre-determined section of the song. All songs in the game are edited for simplified gameplay.

Some tracks are bonus tracks that unlock when all notes are played, allowing players to earn "freestyle" points. Powerups are available to immediately capture a track or double points. If players continually miss notes, their energy meter decreases until the game ends.

Gameplay:

High scores are attained by swiftly moving from completed track to track, increasing a point multiplier. Tracks with more notes are worth more points, making them a strategic choice over simpler tracks.

The game features eight different 'arenas' where players can attempt songs. These arenas, along with the tracks and notes, feature Tron-style graphics, including limited video screens that display the player's FreQ if they perform well or static if they are about to run out of power. Depending on the chosen arena, the track may curve and loop indefinitely until the song ends. One arena is known for having a completely straight track, making it a good practice arena for challenging songs.

'Frequency' allows players to create remixes of any in-game songs, albeit limited to the song's instruments and structure. Remixes can include different melodies, beat lines, tempo changes, and instrument sound modulations. These remixes can be saved and played like regular songs, although high score records are not kept for them.

The game was one of the first to support the PS2 Network Adapter, enabling up to four players to compete against each other and share their remixes. Online play was introduced with an online-capable demo version containing four songs, supplied with the network adapter. The original disc could be swapped after loading the demo disc to enable online play with all songs. In multiplayer mode, all players aim to complete the song on the same track, competing for the highest score. New powerups unique to multiplayer mode can disrupt another player's performance. However, Sony has discontinued the matchmaking server for online play and has not provided third-party replacements.

Some of the songs in the game are produced in-house by Kasson Crooker, who served as the game's musical director and is also a former member of the band Freezepop. Some of his aliases include DJ HMX (HMX standing for Harmonix, the game's developer), Symbion Project, and Komputer Kontroller. Several of the artists featured in the game also contributed to its sequel, 'Amplitude.' These artists include The Crystal Method, BT, Akrobatik, Chris Child (Kodomo, of Surgecore), Melissa Kaplan, Freezepop, and Crooker himself, under his various pseudonyms.
